The demographics of the Scottsville suburb have been gradually changing over the past two decades. Residential properties are continually being turned into student accommodation houses owing to the growing student population in the area. This area is no longer the residential area of choice for the white and the rich. An average resident is a black African. There is also a growing number of foreign nationals. As such, a gap exists for a church that specifically caters for the people who now occupy the area. Such a church will need to honour the heritage of the wider Christian witness, be committed to serving the city, take the Bible seriously and build away from itself.
The ‘new’ residents remain unchurched because they know who they are and are thus unlikely to attend a church where they are not the primary targets. They are different: young, energetic, assertive and loud. There is nothing wrong with any of these characteristics! Scottsville Community Church exists to serve them.

An Evangelical, Reformed, Liturgical and Missional church in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg.
